Japan’s Enduring Comedy Icon Gets a Modern Revival, Promising New Laughter and Nostalgia
A monumental announcement has stirred the hearts of anime and manga fans worldwide: “Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo,” affectionately known as “Kochikame,” is launching a new anime project to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Titled “Shin Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo” (New Kochikame), the series promises to bring the chaotic yet heartwarming adventures of police officer Ryotsu Kankichi to a new generation. Animation studio Gallop, the creative force behind the original 1996 anime, will once again be at the helm, ensuring a blend of familiar charm and fresh excitement.
“Kochikame,” created by Osamu Akimoto, is a cultural cornerstone in Japan, having graced the pages of “Weekly Shonen Jump” for an astounding 40 years from 1976 to 2016. Its protagonist, the unconventional and money-loving police officer “Ryosan,” along with his diverse colleagues, navigates hilarious and often touching escapades centered around the Kameari district of Tokyo’s Katsushika Ward. The series’ incredible longevity and relatable humor, much like a beloved sitcom that captures the essence of everyday life, have cemented its place in Japanese pop culture, spawning numerous anime adaptations and live-action dramas.
The exciting news was unveiled at “Jump Festa 2026” during the Jump Station Stage, featuring guests Impossible Hiru-chan. The event not only showcased the 50th-anniversary logo for the “Kochikame” manga but also revealed the new anime’s title and its vibrant logo. Fans were treated to a captivating teaser visual depicting Ryotsu Kankichi waving towards the viewer, set against the familiar backdrop of the Katsushika-ku Kanamachi Water Purification Plant intake tower. This iconic imagery instantly evokes a sense of homecoming for long-time enthusiasts.
The production team at Gallop is diligently working on the new series, which will introduce a fresh cast of voice actors. Details regarding the new cast are eagerly awaited and are scheduled for release in September 2026. This blend of continuity with the animation studio and the promise of new voices adds an intriguing layer to the revival, sparking conversations among fans about how the classic characters will be reinterpreted.
Beyond the anime, the 50th-anniversary celebrations extend to the manga world. Shueisha Jump Remix will release “Akimoto Osamu’s Nice Choice! Kochikame 50th Anniversary!!” on December 26th (Friday). The first issue will feature a brand-new 5-page one-shot story and include author comments from Osamu Akimoto himself for every episode he personally selected to look back on 50 years of “Kochikame.” This special remix series will be released on the fourth Friday of every month.
