Matatabi Cola: A Unique Craft Beverage for Cat Lovers Debuts
Yakuzen Kissa KURA, based in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, has unveiled “Matatabi Cola” on February 8, 2026. This innovative craft cola, infused with domestic matatabi (Japanese catnip), a blend of spices, and low-GI sugar, is further brightened by a generous squeeze of Odawara’s locally sourced Kataura lemon juice, offering a refreshing and aromatic experience.

The inspiration for this distinctive beverage sprang from a deeply personal place: the master of Yakuzen Kissa KURA’s journey with Ran-chan, a rescued cat adopted two years prior. Ran-chan, a feline with a cautious heart, initially kept her distance, slowly but surely warming up to her new home. The master’s wish to further deepen this bond, combined with Ran-chan’s positive reactions to matatabi, sparked an idea.
While matatabi is well-known for its captivating effect on cats, its potential for human consumption was less explored. Research revealed that matatabi is not only edible for humans but is also traditionally believed to promote blood circulation, provide warmth, and aid in restful sleep, making it a potentially healthful ingredient.
The development of the cola began, leading to a surprising observation. During trials, another resident cat, Chabo-kun, who was already accustomed to humans, appeared to spend more time closer to the person who drank the cola. While Ran-chan’s transformation is still unfolding, the master remains hopeful that this special cola will help bridge the emotional gap with his beloved companion. This unique beverage is designed for those who cherish their cats, seek to strengthen their bond, and wish to enjoy a healthy and vibrant life alongside their feline friends.

Craftsmanship and Collaboration: More Than Just a Drink
The “Matatabi Cola” comes in a charming, retro-inspired package, a creation of renowned manga artist and illustrator Kaoru Maruyama, known for works like “Toshoshitsu no Kiharasana” and “Shishosei.” This cola is more than just a drink; it’s a collaborative effort with “Inu Neko Salon Plus” in Yokohama, the very facility from which Ran-chan was adopted. A portion of the sales will be donated to support “Inu Neko Salon Plus” in their ongoing work of protecting and finding homes for dogs and cats.
The concentrate (200ml) is priced at 1,620 yen (tax included). It is recommended to dilute one part cola with four parts carbonated water for a refreshing drink. For a different experience, it can also be mixed with milk or soy milk; warming it to body temperature creates a comforting, chai-like flavor.
Important Note: This cola is formulated for human consumption. Please do not give it to cats.
Currently, “Matatabi Cola” is available for purchase at the Yakuzen Kissa KURA physical store, their official Rakuten store, and at Inu Neko Salon Plus. Orders are accepted from February 8, 2026, with shipping commencing around February 13. In-store sales at Yakuzen Kissa KURA begin on February 13, while Inu Neko Salon Plus will start taking reservations from February 14, with shipments expected by the end of February.

The Future of Craft Cola and Community Support
Yakuzen Kissa KURA plans to expand its “Matatabi Cola” line beyond the current concentrate, with future plans for a ready-to-drink carbonated version. This expansion reflects their commitment to offering unique and health-conscious beverages.
Yakuzen Kissa KURA is a distinctive cafe nestled in Odawara’s Hakone Itabashi, offering a diverse selection of six medicinal craft colas, including the popular Gojiai Cola, and seven types of herbal teas. “Matatabi Cola” marks their seventh unique cola offering.

Inu Neko Salon Plus, the collaborative partner, operates as a paid pet hotel managed by Yutaka Animal Hospital. Beyond providing temporary lodging, it serves as a vital hub for consultations regarding pet protection and adoption. Visits to the cats at the salon are by appointment only.

Junji Iiyama, master of Yakuzen Kissa KURA, shared his personal motivation: “I wanted to earn the trust of Ran-chan, our ‘solitary cat.’ That’s how ‘Matatabi Cola’ was born.” He added, “I hope this cola can be a small catalyst for other cat lovers who face similar challenges in connecting with their feline companions. Enjoy more joyful moments with your cats alongside ‘Matatabi Cola’.”

This innovative product not only offers a unique taste experience but also embodies a heartwarming story of human-animal connection and community support. It’s a sweet testament to how personal experiences can inspire creative solutions, potentially fostering deeper bonds between people and their beloved pets, and extending a helping paw to rescued animals in need.
