Porno Graffitti Ignites “Hikuidori Ushū Borotobigumi” with New Opening Theme!
The upcoming TV anime series “Hikuidori Ushū Borotobigumi,” an adaptation of Naoki Prize-winning author Shogo Imamura’s acclaimed novel, is set to premiere on January 11, 2026. This historical action saga, depicting the struggles of Edo-era firefighters, will feature a powerful new opening theme: “Hamidashi Gomen” by the iconic rock band Porno Graffitti.

The announcement was made following Porno Graffitti’s live performance at “Minatomirai Romance Porno ’25 ~THE OVEЯ~” in Yokohama, where “Hamidashi Gomen” made its debut. The song’s jacket art was also revealed, confirming its digital release on the anime’s broadcast start date, January 11th.
A Powerful Anthem Penned for the Firefighters of Edo
Porno Graffitti’s guitarist, Shinichi Shindo, penned “Hamidashi Gomen” after immersing himself in the original “Hikuidori Ushū Borotobigumi” novel (Shodensha). The song cleverly blends traditional Japanese expressions, reflecting the historical setting, with a fierce message of encouragement for those navigating the challenges of change in today’s world. It’s an anthem for the unyielding spirit, mirroring the protagonist’s steadfast dedication to his ancient craft.

Porno Graffitti shared their excitement about the new theme:
“This is our first time creating a theme song for a period piece, so we saw it as an exciting challenge. We hope it adds a touch of brilliance to the world of ‘Hikuidori’.”
Regarding the inspiration behind “Hamidashi Gomen,” they added, “I don’t think I could ever be like the protagonist, Gengo Matsunaga, but I started writing from the perspective of how I’d feel if he were around me. Would he be an admirable figure, or a nuisance to friends and acquaintances? Which would it be?”
“Hamidashi Gomen” (English title: Desperado) was written and composed by Shinichi Shindo, with arrangements by Yuta Watabiki, Yusuke Tanaka, and Porno Graffitti. It will be available for pre-release streaming on January 11th. You can find the streaming URL here: https://pornograffitti.lnk.to/Desperado
Unveiling the World of “Hikuidori” with a Second PV
In conjunction with the theme song announcement, the second promotional video for “Hikuidori Ushū Borotobigumi” has been released. This captivating PV, infused with the energy of “Hamidashi Gomen,” offers a glimpse into the protagonist Gengo Matsunaga’s (voiced by Yuichiro Umehara) internal struggles regarding his role as a “hikeshi” (firefighter), and the unwavering convictions of the unique members of the Borotobigumi (ragtag fire brigade).

“Hikeshi” in Edo Japan were not just firefighters; they were often seen as heroes, risking their lives to protect the city from devastating blazes. The anime delves into this rich historical context, blending action with deep emotional narratives.

A Glimpse into the Story and Creator
The story follows Gengo Matsunaga, once known as “Hikuidori” (Fire-Eating Bird), the greatest firefighter in Edo. After leaving his post due to personal reasons, he receives an unexpected offer from the Shinjo Domain. Their fire brigade is ridiculed, lacking funds and talent. Encouraged by his wife, Miyuki, Gengo accepts the role of leader, determined to rebuild the crumbling brigade. As he gathers a colorful crew, affectionately dubbed the “Borotobi” (ragtag kites), they strive to save every life, even as a mysterious series of arsons, dubbed “Kitsunebi” (foxfire), plagues Edo. This entertainment-packed action story unfolds as these tenacious firefighters race against impending disaster.
The original author, Shogo Imamura, born in Kyoto in 1984, is a prolific writer known for his historical fiction. He won the Naoki Sanjugo Prize in 2022 for his novel “Saiō no Tate.” Beyond his writing, Imamura is dedicated to promoting reading among young people through the general incorporated association Honmirai, which he founded. He also owns three bookstores, showcasing his passion for literature.
