“Watashi to Joshiryu: Tokyo Girls’ Style, A Musical Journey” by Yusuke Koide (Base Ball Bear)

Yusuke Koide, known for his work with Base Ball Bear, presents a playlist titled “Tokyo Girls’ Style, A Musical Journey.” His selection highlights the group’s adventurous evolution through various musical styles, demonstrating their fearless approach to sound.

“Listening back to Tokyo Girls’ Style’s early tracks, I was once again struck by how their history has been a journey of musical challenges. I always loved their early funky and groovy sound, but it’s quite remarkable how they reached tropical house within just a year or two of a system change. The timing was surprising; BTS’s ‘Save ME,’ an early adopter of tropical house in K-pop, came out in May 2016, and ‘Shinkai (Hi-ra Mix)’ followed just three months later. When TWICE’s ‘MORE & MORE’ was released in June 2020, I felt like they had come full circle to ‘predawn’! Since then, Tokyo Girls’ Style has continued to evolve, incorporating modern idol songs and city pop-inspired sounds while maintaining a dance music foundation, never confining their musicality. It’s sad as a fan to see this long journey of musical transformation nearing its end, but I pray for Tokyo Girls’ Style to successfully complete their final live performance, and I feel incredibly honored to have been a part of their history with ‘Partition Love’!”
