This vision bloomed into reality at the Fukuoka Flower Show 2026, where a unique collaboration transformed approximately 1,000 plastic bottle caps into vibrant flower pots, offering around 30 participants a hands-on journey into the circular economy.

Organized by NPO Karatsu Farm&Food in partnership with Kyushu Tankentai (Hakata Daimaru), the Precious Plastic workshop invited attendees to witness and partake in the magic of upcycling. The result? Custom-made, marble-patterned pots, ready to cradle the delicate violas from Cremer Factory in Nanaoyama, Saga, and foliage plants from Daiichi Engei Center in Saga City.

From March 22 to 26, 2026, the Fukuoka City Botanical Garden became a canvas for the Fukuoka Flower Show 2026, an international-standard floral event inspired by traditional British garden shows. As part of Fukuoka City’s “One Flower, One Person Movement” – a civic initiative encouraging residents to beautify their surroundings with flowers – the show featured garden contests, exquisite floral displays, and a vibrant market.

This grand celebration of horticulture embraced a new dimension with the introduction of a circular economy perspective from Saga and Karatsu. The event provided a platform to intertwine the beauty of flowers with the urgency of environmental sustainability.

The Art of Transformation: From Waste to Wonder

Upcycling, a process of transforming waste materials into new products of higher value, is a cornerstone of the circular economy – an economic model designed to eliminate waste and continuously circulate resources. This workshop vividly demonstrated these principles by giving discarded plastic a second life.

Collected from local communities, approximately 1,000 plastic bottle caps were processed using Precious Plastic technology. Through heating and molding, these caps were reborn as uniquely beautiful, marble-patterned flower pots. The sight of waste plastic becoming a vessel for nurturing green life offered a profound and tangible experience of this small, yet significant, cycle within an international floral festival.

A Hands-on Journey to Environmental Awareness

Approximately 30 participants, ranging from children to adults, eagerly engaged in the workshop. They experienced the entire process, from feeding the caps into the machine to observing the plastic melt and take shape. The satisfaction was palpable, with one participant joyfully exclaiming, “I’m happy to plant in a pot I upcycled myself!”

This direct involvement in reviving waste and then planting life within it served as a powerful catalyst, helping individuals internalize environmental issues. Many attendees expressed surprise at the transformation, remarking, “It becomes so beautiful?” and “My child was completely absorbed.” The flower pots adorned with violas from Cremer Factory in Karatsu City’s Nanaoyama were particularly popular, eliciting frequent cries of “I want one!”

NPO Karatsu Farm&Food, based in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, spearheaded the production of the flower pots using Precious Plastic technology. Kyushu Tankentai (Hakata Daimaru) provided the crucial exhibition space at the Fukuoka Flower Show 2026. The planting experience was enriched by foliage plants from Daiichi Engei Center in Saga City and the charming violas from Cremer Factory in Nanaoyama, Karatsu City.

This seamless partnership between Saga and Fukuoka brought the concept of “circulation” to life, from the regeneration of waste plastic to the nurturing of new plants.

Precious Plastic: Empowering Local Recycling Efforts

Precious Plastic is an open-source project originating from the Netherlands, which freely shares machine designs for recycling waste plastic globally. NPO Karatsu Farm&Food, operating from Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, leverages this technology to create upcycled products and conduct environmental education workshops. To date, a remarkable 11,241 individuals have participated in their plastic recycling experiences, demonstrating a growing community engagement with sustainable practices.
