Gen Z Reimagines Japanese Culture for a Global Stage
Minerva University’s global Gen Z students are embarking on an exciting journey to redefine how Japanese culture resonates with the world, partnering with the New York-based cultural startup YOHAKU NY. This innovative collaboration aims to transform traditional arts, such as Ikebana, from mere heritage into dynamic, globally accessible cultural experiences that foster dialogue and creativity.

A Fresh Perspective: Gen Z’s Vision for Japanese Culture
Students from Minerva University, representing a diverse global Gen Z demographic, are approaching Japanese culture with fresh eyes and critical thinking. Their core inquiry revolves around a compelling question: “How should Japanese culture be shared with the world?” This program moves beyond passive observation, focusing on creating interactive cultural experiences that bridge understanding.
Currently, these students are immersed in developing a comprehensive Go To Market strategy for YOHAKU NY. Their proposals explore innovative ways to convey the profound value of Japanese culture on a global scale, aiming to redesign it not just as a tourism attraction but as a catalyst for meaningful human connection.

YOHAKU NY Forges Innovative Partnership with Minerva University
YOHAKU NY, a cultural well-being company established in New York in 2025, has proudly joined as a Civic Partner with Minerva University. Minerva is globally recognized for its groundbreaking educational model, where students traverse four continents over four years, engaging with real-world challenges through collaborations with local entities. The university has consistently earned the title of “The World’s Most Innovative University” in the WURI rankings for three consecutive years since 2022. This partnership welcomes four first-year students to Japan, where they are delving into the potential of Japanese culture, specifically through the lens of YOHAKU NY’s Go To Market strategy.

Ikebana: Cultivating Dialogue and Creativity
As part of the program, students immersed themselves in YOHAKU NY’s Ikebana Self-Reflection and Ikebana Team Building experiences. Ikebana, traditionally known as Japanese flower arrangement, is reimagined here as a profound cultural journey that fosters more than just aesthetic appreciation. It cultivates:
-
Focus and introspection
-
Creativity unbound by a single “correct” answer
-
Dialogue that nurtures mutual understanding
YOHAKU NY skillfully repositions Ikebana as a “cultural experience that creates dialogue,” moving beyond mere artistry to inspire deeper human connection and shared vision.

Participant reflections highlight the transformative power of Ikebana:
-
“The way agreement tends to bloom within a team — the vision somehow developed into a shared experience.”
-
“I think it transcends the barrier of words and lets us connect at a deeper level.”
-
“It provides space for people to creatively express themselves and discuss differences in perspectives.”
The Serenity of Tea Ceremony: Valuing the “Little Things”
Beyond the vibrant world of Ikebana, students also delved into the tranquil realm of the traditional tea ceremony, guided by Machiko Hoshina, a revered tea master of the Urasenke tradition. This experience offered profound insights into the shared philosophical values embedded within Japanese culture. One student eloquently captured the essence: “I think sometimes we can fail to appreciate things because we are so ready to do everything at once, but when we sit and just spend time focusing on one thing, it lets us value the ‘little’ things in life.” The serene atmosphere of the tea ceremony underscored the timeless importance of mindfulness and appreciating the subtle beauty in everyday life.

A Forward Look: The Future of Japanese Culture Abroad
The innovative proposals crafted by these students are set to be unveiled at a symposium scheduled for April 17, 2026. This event promises to be a pivotal moment, showcasing groundbreaking strategies for introducing Japanese culture to a global audience in new and engaging ways.
Yoshimi Nakajima, Founder & CEO of YOHAKU NY, shared her enthusiasm for this collaboration: “I believe the value of Japanese culture does not emerge solely from how Japanese people explain it, but also from how people from other cultures receive and interpret it. It was a great pleasure to discuss the future possibilities of Japanese culture together with students from Minerva University.” This sentiment beautifully encapsulates the program’s core mission: to foster a dynamic, reciprocal cultural exchange that enriches understanding on all sides.
