Unwind with ‘Yurukura’: Japan’s New Comic Trend Embracing Tranquil Daily Life

A Joint Fair at Kinokuniya Shinjuku Main Store Spotlights the Comforting World of Everyday Stories

Tokyo, Japan – A captivating new genre of Japanese comics, dubbed “Yurukura” (combining “yururi” for relaxed and “kurashi” for daily life), is set to charm readers at a special fair. Starting March 1, 2026, the “Yurukura Fair” will be held at Kinokuniya Bookstore Shinjuku Main Store, bringing together 16 popular titles that celebrate the gentle, heartwarming rhythms of everyday existence. This collaborative event, spearheaded by Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha and nine other prominent publishers, marks the first time these beloved works are showcased together, offering a serene escape for busy minds.

The appeal of “Yurukura” comics lies in their tender depiction of ordinary moments, often centered around cherished household items, family bonds, or the quiet comfort of home. Titles like Waternagi Tori’s Shiawase wa Tabete Nete Mate (Akita Shoten), which has even been adapted into a live-action series, Shinzo Keigo’s Hirayasumi (Shogakukan), and the Tokubetsu Janai Hi series by Inakuho (Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha), which boasts over 350,000 copies in circulation, have garnered widespread affection. These stories resonate deeply, offering a sense of peace and familiarity akin to a cozy blanket on a chilly evening.

The genre’s gentle charm extends far beyond Japan’s borders. Chiaki Ida’s comic and illustration collection, Ie ga Suki na Hito (Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha), a bestseller with over 200,000 copies sold, has seen remarkable international success. It has been published or is slated for publication in 12 languages (excluding Japanese), achieving top rankings such as #1 in the “Female Manga” category on Amazon Spain and #3 on Amazon France in late 2025 and early 2026. Furthermore, it claimed the #1 spot for two consecutive years (2024 and 2025) in the “Lifestyle” category on Taiwan’s largest traditional Chinese e-book platform, Readmoo, underscoring its universal appeal. “Fans worldwide are finding solace in these gentle narratives,” commented one reader, “It’s like a warm cup of tea on a rainy day, offering a quiet escape.”

The “Yurukura Fair” provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in this comforting world. The exhibition space on the 8th-floor comic floor will feature recommendation comments from the bookstore’s comic staff for all participating works, alongside displays of reproduction original artwork and panels. Additionally, trial booklets will be available for readers to sample the diverse range of stories. Please note that the availability of reproduction original artwork, panels, and trial booklets may vary by title.
