“Futamasu!!!!!!” Project: Bridging Idols and Local Communities
“Futamasu!!!!!!” is a special project commemorating the 20th anniversary of “The Idolmaster” series. It involves collaborations with local governments across Japan to install original manholes featuring designs of the series’ idols. In July 2025, Tokoname City proudly unveiled its unique manhole at Rinku Tokoname Station North Exit Plaza.
The manhole design beautifully combines Miku Maekawa, an idol known for her love of cat cafes, with “Tokonyan,” the city’s iconic giant beckoning cat. This artistic blend creates a visually appealing landmark that draws fans and tourists alike. Since December 2025, the Tokoname Tourism Information Center has been distributing manhole cards and selling related merchandise, attracting numerous visitors from all over Japan.

The manhole can be found at Rinku Tokoname Station North Exit Plaza (near 3-chome, Rinkucho, Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, 479-0882).
The Enduring Appeal of Kawaii Culture and Community Support
The Furusato Nozei system, a unique Japanese initiative, allows taxpayers to make donations to local governments of their choice and receive a tax deduction, often accompanied by local specialty products as a token of appreciation. This system, when combined with popular cultural phenomena like “The Idolmaster,” creates a powerful synergy for regional revitalization. It’s a win-win: fans get to cherish exclusive memorabilia, and the city receives vital support, all while celebrating a shared love for kawaii culture.
The enthusiastic response to the “Futamasu!!!!!!” collaboration in Tokoname City highlights the global reach and impact of Japanese idol culture. It demonstrates how beloved characters can inspire community engagement and economic contributions. As one fan was heard exclaiming, “Getting Miku’s goods while supporting Tokoname is the best! I can’t wait for February 22nd!”
This initiative serves as a shining example of how contemporary pop culture can intertwine with traditional civic programs to foster unique connections. The continued success of such collaborations will surely inspire more innovative ways to spread kawaii culture worldwide, inviting international fans to discover and support local Japanese communities in exciting and meaningful ways.
