Nara is poised to become a haven for penguin enthusiasts as the ‘Nara Penguin Land’ event makes its highly anticipated return to the Kintetsu Department Store Nara Store. Running from January 14 to 19, 2026, this grand exhibition will transform the 3rd-floor event hall into a vibrant sanctuary of all things penguin, featuring an impressive collection of over 20,000 items from approximately 70 popular creators and shops.
This marks the sixth installment of the popular event, which first launched in December 2020. ‘Nara Penguin Land’ is a special designation for the ‘Penguin Bazaar’ when it takes place in Nara, distinguishing it as one of Japan’s largest gatherings dedicated exclusively to penguin-themed creations. It’s a rare opportunity for fans to experience and purchase items from creators often only found online or at various regional events, drawing passionate penguin lovers from across Japan and even overseas.

Visitors can expect a sensory feast of diverse penguin artistry. Imagine the intricate stitching of Atelier Rigitta’s ‘realistic’ embroidery accessories, where each tiny thread brings a penguin’s expressive eyes to life. Or perhaps the playful fashion of ‘Penguin Fashion Designer Saba,’ whose ‘Penguin All-Purpose Dress’ ingeniously transforms into 18 different penguin species – a true testament to ‘kawaii’ ingenuity, blending cuteness with clever design.
Among the featured artists is Miho Kagawa, a photographer renowned for her poignant images of emperor penguin chicks in the Antarctic. Her works offer a window into the serene beauty of the polar regions, with proceeds supporting her upcoming volunteer activities in wild penguin habitats.

Music fans might recognize TKPG, the official penguin character of TK from the rock band Ling Tosite Sigure, a unique blend of rock culture and adorable avian appreciation. For those seeking practical yet charming items, Mikawaya presents denim bags with a whimsical leather patch proudly declaring, ‘Even if a penguin pulls it, it won’t break’ – a playful guarantee of durability.

And for a unique local touch, jiu sandals & baby shoes, known for their popular penguin bags featured as Kyoto’s Furusato Nozei (hometown tax donation) return gifts, will also be present. This system allows taxpayers to support local municipalities while receiving local specialties, making these penguin bags a delightful symbol of regional pride. Additionally, Craft Beer Bar Beans will offer charming penguin-logo glasses and koozies, while Kyuu, the illustrator for Gakken’s ‘Penguin Zukan,’ will showcase acrylic and paper goods that capture the realistic yet lovable essence of penguins.

Beyond the main event hall, the delightful penguin theme extends to the 2nd-floor Fruit & Sweets Cafe ‘FleurFleur.’ Here, a special collaboration menu, inspired by the enchanting illustrations of poster designer Mayu Sasaki, will be served. Indulge in treats like the ‘Emperor Penguin Chick Apple Pie,’ a visual and culinary delight, or the vibrant ‘Adelie Penguin Orange Cake.’ For a savory touch, the ‘Little/White-flippered Penguin Pistachio Cream Pasta’ offers a charmingly themed lunch option. Each dish is a miniature edible artwork, designed to evoke smiles.

As one enthusiastic attendee from a previous year remarked, “It’s like stepping into a dream world where every corner holds a new penguin friend!” This sentiment perfectly captures the atmosphere of joy and shared passion that defines Nara Penguin Land.
The enduring popularity of ‘Nara Penguin Land’ highlights the universal appeal of kawaii culture, extending far beyond traditional characters to embrace niche themes like penguins. Events like this not only provide a platform for independent artists but also foster a sense of community among enthusiasts, proving that the love for adorable, well-crafted items knows no bounds. As kawaii continues to charm audiences globally, such specialized events in Japan are setting a precedent for how unique passions can be celebrated and shared, potentially inspiring similar themed gatherings worldwide.
