A Stage Greeting Like No Other

To celebrate the films’ release, Nissy held special stage greetings for both works at United Cinemas Aqua City Odaiba on December 23rd. Joined by dancers kazuki (s**t kingz) and Show-hey as MCs, Nissy shared invaluable anecdotes about his creative journey as a performer.

Due to ongoing treatment for vocal cord surgery, Nissy communicated with the audience through whistles and by projecting his typed responses onto a large screen. This unique interaction was live-streamed to 72 theaters nationwide, reaching approximately 14,000 fans.

Following the screening of the live film, Nissy appeared on stage to a roaring ovation. He expressed his heartfelt joy, conveying through the screen, “It’s finally here. Finally, finally. I’m so happy you watched it.” He added with a smile, “It’s fresh, not being able to speak. I’m relieved seeing all your faces now,” met with warm applause.

During a Q&A session, Nissy was asked about the most challenging aspect of his stage direction. He highlighted the fountain effects during the first chorus of “Rendezvous,” explaining the intricate coordination required. “The artist, dancers, band, fountains, service cameras, VJs, floor VJs, lighting, sound, external sound, visuals, cameras, camera switching… everything moves in a predetermined sequence within just 1-2 seconds, from the moment the fountain begins to subside until I start singing the chorus. Even a slight deviation would create a sense of discomfort for the audience.” He emphasized that such precise timing is crucial for audience immersion, predicting that linking visuals, lighting, and sound will become standard in future entertainment.

Nissy also shared his unique perspective on audience reactions. “There are many people who look blankly, as if meditating. Seeing that makes me smirk; it’s a pleasure.” Conversely, he confessed, “If there’s someone watching calmly, I feel a little uneasy.” He likened sensing the overall atmosphere of a live performance to a “waveform,” stating, “If one person seems out of sync, my eyes are drawn to them, just as I’d notice if a camera light didn’t come on at the expected moment.” This reveals the profound connection he feels with his audience.

Regarding the experience of performing before 50,000 spectators, Nissy stated, “Honestly, it’s not a simple emotion like ‘fun’ or ‘beautiful scenery’.” He reflected on each fan’s individual journey: “I think about what thoughts they had, how they adjusted their schedules, bought tickets, and spent their days leading up to this moment. Couples, parents and children, friends, solo attendees. It’s incredible that 45,000 people with diverse backgrounds gather in one place.” He concluded, “The very act of coming is a blessing.”

The Untold Story: A Glimpse Behind the Scenes

For the documentary film’s stage greeting, Nissy promoted the work by saying, “They really shot for 1300 hours, and dozens of people edited it over several months. The number of scenes is overwhelmingly large. It’s filmed with a closeness that can only be achieved when the relationship between the shooter and the subject is established, so I hope you watch it with that in mind.” He humorously added, “Condensing 1300 hours into two hours… it’s hard to convey that feeling.”

When asked if he planned to make a film from the beginning, Nissy explained, “When people come to a live show, they’re in a live mood, so they don’t initially expect a cinematic story to unfold. It’s about how to guide them from a concert-going mindset to a movie-watching mindset. So, the story needs to be as simple as possible. Yet, if they watch intently, the story progresses, and if the story is too easy to follow in a ‘movie theater’ setting, it might be boring. So, I created it with a 70% live, 30% movie sensibility.” This nuanced approach highlights his dedication to crafting a multi-layered ‘Entertainment’ experience.

Regarding how he perceives fans’ feelings, Nissy shared, “At a live show, it’s their expressions and the atmosphere. As I often say, the vibe of the venue differs depending on the location. You can tell once you’re on stage (laughs). Otherwise, it’s through social media. I receive various comments, and warm words make me happy. I try not to look at comments that don’t seem warm.” When asked to describe “Team Nissy” in one word, he chose “百花繚乱 (Hyakka Ryoran),” meaning “a hundred flowers blooming in profusion,” signifying many talents and expressions blossoming on stage. He added, “When the direction of each session connects beautifully, it’s exhilarating!”

Nissy concluded the event by expressing his gratitude: “To everyone who will be watching from now on, I sincerely thank you. You’ll see many sides of me, and I hope you’ll feel a deep sense of how it was created. Thank you truly for coming. Love you (heart emoji).”
