A Deep Dive into “LOVER”: Nanako Yoshida’s Latest Artistic Journey
Harajuku, a district renowned for its vibrant culture and artistic innovation, is set to host a captivating new exhibition. tHE GALLERY HARAJUKU proudly presents “LOVER,” a solo exhibition by the acclaimed artist Nanako Yoshida, opening its doors on December 25th, 2025. This showcase invites viewers into a world where the playful meets the profound, exploring the multifaceted emotion of “like” through a fresh artistic lens.

Following her previous exhibition, “empty smile,” Yoshida expands her unique universe, this time focusing on the concept of “suki” (好き), meaning “like” or “love” in Japanese. The exhibition features iconic motifs such as rubber ducks, rendered with striking realism, alongside diverse portrayals of young girls. This intriguing blend creates a memorable experience, inviting audiences to reflect on their own feelings of affection and attachment.
The Artist’s Vision: Blending Sweetness with Shadows
Nanako Yoshida, a versatile creator active across analog and digital mediums, describes her work as a visible manifestation of her emotions and experiences, intertwined with the charming image of the “ahiru-chan” (rubber duck). She states, “I crafted this exhibition to highlight the intriguing balance between the cuteness of the motifs and the appearing girls, and a subtly dark atmosphere. This time, the main focus is on works related to my personal feeling of ‘like.'”
Yoshida aims to be a “chameleon creator,” adapting her style to evoke a sense of “kawaii” (cute) in many forms. Her previous works, often characterized by unique drawing techniques like “jewelry painting” shared on platforms like Threads and X, have garnered significant attention for their blend of charm and intense sensibility.
Curator’s Insight: An Evolution on Canvas
Curator Yasumasa Yonehara highlights a significant evolution in Yoshida’s practice. While her digital illustrations have been a cornerstone of her identity, “LOVER” continues her exploration with acrylic paints on canvas, a medium first showcased in her previous solo exhibition. This shift emphasizes the physical presence of the artwork.
“New works will be displayed, where realistic depictions of children’s bath toys, the rubber duck, overlap with anime-like girl figures on the canvas,” Yonehara explains. “The texture and thickness of the paint, along with the richness of colors on the physical support of the canvas, reveal a dynamism and raw vitality distinct from her digital expressions.” He notes that the exhibition, centered on the theme of “LOVER,” is an attempt to visualize Yoshida’s own feelings of “like,” her life, memories, and desire for intimacy. The interplay of cuteness and a dark undertone, daily life and symbolism, is presented with heightened intensity through the layered quality of acrylic paint. This exhibition, according to Yonehara, underscores a new dimension in Yoshida’s creative journey, preserving the essence of her digital origins while embracing traditional painting practices.
