A New Horizon: STU48’s 4th Generation Trainees Take the Stage
STU48, the idol group based in Japan’s Setouchi region, saw its 4th generation research students make a significant stride with their first-ever solo performance, titled “Saa Mirai wo Sagashi ni Ikou ka?” (Let’s Go Search for the Future?). The event took place on December 20 (Saturday) at BLUE LIVE HIROSHIMA in Hiroshima Prefecture, drawing enthusiastic cheers from fans.

This momentous occasion featured all 18 members who joined STU48 as research students on August 1, 2025, following their successful audition in July. Their journey to the solo stage began with their initial unveiling at “@JAM EXPO 2025 supported by UP-T” in Yokohama Arena on August 31.
The Path to Performance: A Glimpse into Idol Trainee Life
The concept of “research students” (研究生, kenkyuusei) in Japanese idol culture refers to apprentices or trainees who undergo intensive training and often fierce competition before potentially being promoted to full members. For this debut solo performance, only 12 members could perform in each of the two shows (day and evening), with merely six members appearing in both. This rigorous selection process was chronicled in a four-episode documentary series – “Kibou” (Hope), “Takaramono” (Treasure), “Hikari” (Light), and “Shukko” (Departure) – released on STU48’s official YouTube channel. The series showcased the trainees’ growth through team divisions (S, T, U), choreography practice, and bonding, all set against a backdrop of competitive spirit. Episode 4, “Shukko,” notably captured the raw emotions of tears, joy, and the struggles faced during the announcement of the six fixed members, offering an intimate look at their dedication and first experiences with setbacks.
“Departure” into the Future: Performance Highlights
The concert kicked off with an overture, punctuated by three resonant ship horns and the sound of waves, creating an immersive atmosphere of departure. The members then appeared on stage, opening the performance with “Shukko,” a song that aptly symbolized their new journey as part of STU48. Their powerful performance was filled with determination and hope.
During the self-introduction segment, members unveiled their unique catchphrases. Ako Sogabe lightened the mood by revealing, “I couldn’t decide on my own, so I consulted my parents multiple times and even ChatGPT!” The audience responded with laughter, showcasing the trainees’ charming personalities.

Following this, the unit block featured songs centered on themes of “love” and “liking,” reflecting the trainees’ affection for STU48 and their desire to win over the fans. Their idol-like performances captivated the audience.

As the concert progressed, the setlist conveyed messages of happiness found through STU48 and the fresh energy the 4th generation brings to the group. Songs also touched upon the internal struggles between ideals and reality, coupled with a strong will to move forward. Sayaka Shimada, who performed as the center for “Kurayami” (Darkness), shared her emotional journey: “I practiced every day, getting many bruises on my knees. Today, under the spotlight, I think I was able to perform with emotion. The moment I saw everyone’s faces, my tension eased.” Her words resonated with the audience, highlighting the immense effort behind their radiant stage presence.

The main part of the performance concluded with Amu Fujita addressing the audience: “Our 4th generation research student performance ‘Saa Mirai wo Sagashi ni Ikou ka?’ has just begun. We will continue to work together, so please support us.” The members then performed STU48’s first original song, “Setouchi no Koe” (Voice of Setouchi), a poignant dedication to fans who watch over them like the “blue sea” of Setouchi.
An Emotional Encore and a New Beginning
The persistent calls for an encore brought the members back to the stage, performing “Seifuku no Omosa” (Weight of the Uniform) and “Pedal to Sharin to Kita Michi to” (Pedals, Wheels, and the Road We’ve Traveled). The venue erupted in excitement, fueled by a palpable sense of unity among the trainees. Amu Fujita expressed her heartfelt emotions during the encore, reflecting on their journey: “When it was decided that we would have this 4th generation research student performance, I was very anxious, and there were times when my mental state sank while being chased by daily lessons. But seeing this scenery today, I truly felt glad that I worked hard, and I want to work even harder from now on. Thank you very much.” Her candid words underscored the emotional depth of their debut.

Mii Hamada echoed this sentiment, stating, “Today’s performance was so much fun, and this time flew by. I want to remember this scenery and make today’s performance a start to further excitement from now on. Thank you.” The concert culminated with a powerful performance of “Yumeriki” (Dream Power), a song that resonated with each trainee’s individual dreams, marking a strong and hopeful conclusion.

This first solo performance served as a powerful culmination of the “battle until the performance” documented on YouTube, showcasing the 18 STU48 4th generation research students’ dedication, growth, and their definitive first step as members of the group.
