This global trend sees AI-generated characters and videos, often devoid of clear meaning or context, spreading virally across the internet, particularly from Indonesia. These peculiar creations, featuring hybrid animal-object characters speaking nonsensical Italian-esque phrases, are collectively produced and disseminated by countless users. Beyond these playful yet unsettling trends, the rise of deepfakes and the surge in AI-generated videos with unclear authorship raise critical questions about who creates and who is responsible for the powerful narratives shaping our perceptions.
“AI Yokai Memu”: A Modern Nurarihyon
Rather than viewing these developments solely as technical or ethical dilemmas, the Yokai Art Museum interprets them as a burgeoning cultural phenomenon. In Japan, “yokai” have historically served as a cultural lens through which people understood and confronted inexplicable events or anxieties. By giving a name and form to the unexplainable, people could create a psychological distance and engage with their fears. “AI Yokai Memu” is precisely this modern manifestation.
“AI Yokai Memu” exists alongside creations without a clear author, influencing human emotions and judgments without discernible intent or accountability. It is not a liar but a nearly perfect illusion, seamlessly blending into society. This yokai symbolizes a way to engage with the mysterious entity of AI—not as an object of fear or rejection, but as something to understand and coexist with, maintaining a thoughtful distance.
Director Chuhei Yagyu described “AI Yokai Memu” with vivid imagery: “AI Yokai Memu scrutinizes information with the eye on its navel, licks the material with its large tongue, and stores it in its head. From this accumulated information, it creates AI images or videos, which it then dons as its alter ego, ‘slipping’ into people’s lives. It’s much like the modern-day Nurarihyon. Coupled with the serpent’s tail, which possesses the power of diffusion, it swiftly spreads ‘slippingly’ across the world.”
Through “AI Yokai Memu,” the museum culturally poses fundamental questions we now face: “What does it mean to believe?” “What is authentic?” and “Who is the subject of expression?”
This creative approach to modern anxieties follows the 2024 “Yokai of the Year,” Komekakushi (Rice Hider), which symbolized the “Reiwa rice riot” related to food security.
YOKAI EXPO 2026: A Global Gathering
The newly unveiled “AI Yokai Memu” will be a central exhibit at the “YOKAI EXPO 2026,” slated for February 22, 2026, in Shodoshima. This event, hailed as “Japan’s largest yokai trade fair,” will gather enthusiasts, researchers, artists, and creators to celebrate and promote yokai culture globally.
