Monogata and Lumine are scaling up their efforts to 13 stores as part of the “Lumine/NEWoMan Ethi-Carnival” starting in January 2026. The need for such an initiative is stark. A proprietary survey by Monogata targeting 5,423 cosmetic users revealed that a staggering 86.3% discard color cosmetics without finishing them. More than half of these users admitted to feeling a sense of guilt associated with this waste. On average, individuals hold onto 7.4 unused cosmetic items, a number that jumps to 15.5 for avid beauty enthusiasts, painting a clear picture of the vast potential for resource recovery.

Following their initial collection drive at six Lumine stores in July 2025, approximately 17,800 items (around 445kg) of unused cosmetics were successfully gathered. However, a significant challenge emerged: the labor-intensive process of manually separating containers from their contents, and then further sorting the contents by color, proved to be both time-consuming and costly for Monogata. This bottleneck highlighted the critical need for a more efficient and scalable solution.

Engaging Consumers: The “Cosmetic Content Extraction Workshop”

To overcome this challenge, Monogata and Lumine devised an innovative solution: the “Cosmetic Content Extraction Workshop.” This participatory event transforms the act of cosmetic disposal into an engaging experience. Participants can choose to bring their own unused cosmetics for collection or actively take part in separating their items (and even some of Monogata’s pre-collected, unsorted cosmetics) into containers and color-sorted contents within Lumine’s store spaces.

This hands-on approach fosters what is known in Japan as “Jibun-goto-ka,” or making the issue personal. By directly engaging in the recycling process, participants gain a “guilt-free” sense of contributing to a sustainable future. A trial workshop at Lumine Ogikubo in November 2025 garnered enthusiastic feedback. Participants shared, “I’ve never done anything like separating my precious cosmetics myself, so I really enjoyed the experience.” This positive response suggests the workshops are not only effective but also a genuinely fun way to promote sustainability.

From Cosmetics to Creative Colorants: The Magic of Upcycling

The journey of these collected cosmetics doesn’t end with separation. Monogata employs its patented “magic water” technology to upcycle the cosmetic contents into versatile colorants. These colorants find new life in a wide array of applications, including paints, craft materials, and industrial uses. Lumine itself integrates these upcycled materials into its circular economy efforts, utilizing them for novelties and even interior decorations within its stores.

Monogata’s existing “SminkArt®” business already serves as a hub for this transformation, collecting cosmetic bulk from individual users, over 17 cosmetic companies, and retail stores. Through collaborations with major corporations, the company has successfully developed colorant technologies that can convert surplus cosmetics into materials for printing inks, stationery, building materials, various resins (such as PMMA, ABS, AS, PE, PP, PET, silicone elastomer), interior and exterior paints, recycled paper boards, metal powder coatings, and even clothing prints. Furthermore, Monogata is developing systems to enhance traceability, calculate environmental performance indicators, support certifications like DPP, and improve logistics efficiency from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) perspective, solidifying its role as a central player in the cosmetics industry’s circular economy.
