Wacom, a global leader in digital pen technology, is set to elevate emerging Japanese animation talent by sponsoring the newly established “Nippon Animation Short Award” at the 26th Nippon Connection Japanese Film Festival in Frankfurt, Germany. This exciting collaboration aims to spotlight independent creators and their innovative short films on a prestigious international stage.

The Nippon Connection Japanese Film Festival, held annually in Frankfurt, stands as the world’s largest celebration of Japanese cinema. Running from June 2 to 7, 2026, across multiple venues in Frankfurt, the festival will showcase approximately 100 Japanese short and feature films. With over 20,000 visitors in 2025, it serves as a vital platform for sharing Japanese film culture globally. The introduction of this new award is expected to significantly broaden the festival’s longstanding commitment to supporting burgeoning creators and innovative filmmaking.

The “Nippon Animation Short Award” specifically targets short animated works, with a maximum runtime of 20 minutes. It focuses on supporting independent animation, defined as self-produced animation by individuals or small teams, often characterized by its experimental approach and high degree of independence. This initiative is a joint effort between Wacom and Nippon Connection, designed to nurture the next generation of creative voices from Japan.

Nobutaka Ide, President and CEO of Wacom, shared his enthusiasm for the award, stating, “Independent animation is a powerful driving force for creative innovation. The ‘Nippon Animation Short Award’ was established to help young artists gain wider recognition and appreciation. We are delighted to accompany the growth journey of new talent through this initiative.”

Applications for the award are open to short animated films produced between 2024 and 2026. Eligible works must be either produced in Japan or directed by Japanese filmmakers. Nippon Connection will curate three selected films for a premiere event in Germany, from which an international jury will choose the winning entry. The victor will receive a prize of 2,000 Euros during the festival. Aspiring animators can submit their works via the official festival website, NipponConnection.com, with the application period closing on February 1, 2026.
